"De Moeren"
“De Moeren” still is a small municipality near the Belgian-French border. It is the lowest part of the charming polder scenery in Flanders, 3 meters (10 feet) below sea-level.This lower open area looks like a chequerboard submerged by draining a large swamp. This was done in the 17th century by engineer Cobergher.
23 Windmills, equipped with the “Archimedes screw”, were set up to pump the water from the lower Moeren into the higher canal.
The picturesque windmills “St-Karels” and “St-Gustaaf”, as well as the network of ditches remind us of this nostalgic time.
